Earlier this month, Legally Yours intern Christine Bulos sat down with Julie Dal Santo from My Career Capital to learn a little bit more about her innovative career management platform, as well as her career journey as an experienced coach, and HR and user experience professional. Read on to learn more…

How did you start your career journey and what led you to the establishment of My Career Capital?

Julie started her career on a somewhat unconventional path.

Career pathways can sometimes be unplanned and unpredictable, and not as linear as many initially believe them to be. Julie shared that she had initially wanted to begin her career in social work, which prompted her to begin her university studies in that area. Although she loved this, it wasn’t her forever plan, so she decided to take a gap-year and work as an air hostess, allowing her to travel all over the world and meet all kinds of diverse people.

Julie then pivoted into a career in Human Resources (HR). She spent the last decade or so in various HR roles, and more recently, after having had three children, decided to deep dive into further learning during her maternity leave period. Julie has a special love for further learning and emphasised on the changing world around us. There is now a greater need to keep up with the times and possess the new, in-demand skills required by employees of the current era. This competitive job market meant that career tracking and purposeful growth is required in order to succeed.

Julie has also always had a love for purposeful communication and supporting individuals in the early days of their careers. She knows what it’s like to start a career with people in her corner, and have mentors and managers that support you, hence why she believed that the creation of a platform that allows for effective career management and growth, is absolutely essential in today’s world.

As she understood the nuances behind this demand, and upon joining a User Experience short course during a maternity leave period, she came up with the brilliant, innovative idea of “My Career Capital,” which ultimately aims to assist with career control and empowerment.

How does My Career Capital actually work?

My Career Capital is an innovative career management platform that disrupts the status quo of performance and career management. It effectively empowers employers, employees, freelancers, and job seekers to better track, manage and plan their career growth, all in one place. The platform allows you to successfully map out and leverage your unique value across your career journey and across different employers too.

It is completely customisable, and includes cutting-edge AI tools, such as ‘Design My Career’ to analyse skills and experience and suggest upskilling and new career opportunities. The platform acts as a digital portfolio of sorts, whereby careers goals, performance, self-coaching and career transitions can all be tracked and analysed long-term. Access to the free version of the platform is available for as long as you need, across all employers and job roles.

There is also a paid version with additional benefits and tools available. The platform is designed for continuity, with a designated archive folder available as well. My Career Capital is also able to generate a CV for you, which aids with job applications too. The hub provides a holistic view of you and your skills and allows for all of it to be printed out and taken with you to a session with your mentor, coach, manager or simply for self-reflection.

Why is taking an active role in career structure and progression so important?

Traditionally, we think careers are linear pathways and that our current job and employer will develop us and our skills to better climb the corporate ladder. Unfortunately, for several reasons, this simply is not the case and definitely does not happen anymore – at least not as straightforward sounding as that. The manner in which careers traditionally have grown and progressed has changed, as previously discussed. Career development instead often goes in different directions, both forward and backwards.

The evolvement of technology and the impact it has on various industries, including the automation of many roles, has significantly influenced and changed the way things are done now. The expectation that your employer will look after you and push your career growth, does not always happen, which is why it is absolutely essential to maintain your growth yourself. Employees need to have an edge in today’s competitive job market, and all need to equip themselves with the tools and skills necessary to thrive.

Platforms like My Career Capital provide the opportunity to assist with this exact issue, with various tools and resources all available at your fingertips. Reaching your ultimate career potential and feeling career fulfilment has never been so easy, until now.

What do you love most about what you do?

There’s a lot! Julie loves leaning into her creative energy to construct something that has never been done before and push the boundaries even. She loves making a positive contribution to the communities around her and the people within them and beyond. These things are important to her, and ultimately, she wants to be connected to the work that she does, all whilst ensuring it is meaningful.

Helping and supporting others and bringing positive energy to the work undertaken are other things that she loves about her job as well.

Julie also shared that she never backs down from a challenge, and in fact thrives on them! Considering that she created and launched the project whilst working and having three young kids at home during the peak of Covid-19, proves that she’s a pro and is in fact completely okay with putting in the hard yards, considering the vastly positive, tangible outcomes that come out as a result of users thriving on the platform.
